Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) affects the myeloid cells in the blood, that is all the blood cells except the lymphocytes. The word chronic describes the comparatively sluggish progress of the disease if left untreated. Most patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia can be treated effectively with anti-cancer drugs. It is not, however, generally considered possible to achieve a cure solely by drug treatment. A relatively new drug, called Glivec, may change this picture but it is too soon to predict the long-term outcomes of this new therapy.
